For 1978, the C/K became the first American full-size pickup truck sold with a diesel engine (a 5.7L Oldsmobile diesel V8); a 6.2L V8 diesel was introduced for 1982. My 1975 Chevy C10 is a 454 with dual tanks. For 1976, engine displacement decals were removed from the grille; a voltage gauge replaced the ammeter in the instrument panel. GM had sent the tooling for the two-door cab production to Mexico (where it was produced for local markets through 1991). Developed specifically for South American production, each version was also derived (to various extents) from the contemporary version of its American C/K counterpart. Largely intended to distinguish the C/K series from its GMT 400 successor (which would be produced alongside it), "R" was used for two-wheel drive and "V" for four-wheel drive;[31] the nomenclature change was also applied to the vehicle identification number (VIN).
