This does have traces of the ink markings, but they are illegible. Case is tarnished and may have a few minor dents or dings, but overall is near excellent condition. Fired prime remains in place. The projectile is the Common type which has a solid nose and could be used with no filler as an armor piercing round, or with a HE filler and base detonating fuze as an armor piercing/high explosive round. The M3 used a different form of liner. Overall condition is fine to excellent with some minor dings and scrapes, although the brass case is heavily tarnished to a chocolate brown. This excellent condition case is dated 1954 and has good stenciled markings indicating it was loaded with the M42A1 High Explosive shell. Photo shows a 17 long tube used for shipping warheads, but the motor tube is the same thing, only 43 inches long. INERT- No explosive or flammable components. These can be fired from any of the standard grenade launchers, and the grenade launching cartridge ignites a propelling charge in the rear tube of the signal which acts as a rocket to gain a height of about 600 feet. Headstamp date for initial manufacture is 1945. Overall excellent with just minor tarnish on the brass case. This needs a good cleaning and some soaking with WD-40 to loosen the rust and cement and paint, and it will clean up pretty nicely with some patient scraping followed by a coat of wax or lacquer or black paint. These were the real workhorses of the battlefield, churning mud, men and equipment into the murderous mess known as no mans land as well as decimating allied trench lines. Browning designed gun, the 37mm aircraft cannon M4 and M10 used in the Bell P-39 Cobra and P-63 King Cobra fighters and also on some PT-Boats which had the M4 guns mounted on them. It is a 5 inch case, Mark 5, for the 38 caliber gun (to avoid confusion with the 5/25, 5/51, and 5/54 caliber guns also being used with different barrel lengths (or calibers) and taking different cartridge cases.) In the post-WW2 period they adopted a longer 40 x 263 mmR case for greater range and velocity when fired through a barrel 70 calibers long (compared to the shorter 60 caliber length barrels.) These were used with the International Flare Signal and Kilgore Model 52 flare guns, and probably all the other heavy 37mm flare guns with barrels about 8 inches long. A firing pin in the center of the cap will then ignite the primer and the signal will be fired. The top of the projectile body had threads cut into it, and these were for a fuze protector, such as this one. INERT- no flammable or explosive components. To fire the Stokes, the safety pin was removed to both arm the shell and allow it to fit inside its launcher.
